Chapter Twenty-Four

4 A.M., 3 MAY 1983

Dear Maggie,

Hope you are well. I’m starting to feel like a very bad penny, the one you see on the ground that’s all black and green and you don’t want to pick it up. I get that you can’t reply to me. I know these letters are being sent over the Atlantic with no guarantee of reply, but I do want to keep writing to you. I hope they’re not causing you any difficulty?

I wanted to let you know something. I’ve seen him. I’ve seen my boy. And he is amazing! I went over to Veronica’s house in Eagle Rock and he was in a pram at the bottom of the garden under a cherry blossom tree. As I walked towards it, my heart was soaring, soaring right up to the sky, and I was so excited. I’d imagined having a child, but not like this, I don’t know what I’d imagined, really – but to walk towards that pram in the beautiful garden, knowing he was inside, was just the best thing ever. His name is Michael and he’s the most beautiful baby boy in the world! I’m going to visit him as often as I can. He’s going to know I am a devoted dad. I’m going to be the very best I can be.

It feels so good to tell you this. You might see my grinning mug in a newspaper sometime soon and the grin on my face will be because of him.

I do hope you’re okay, Maggie? I have other news. I’m going up for a part in a film. The film is called A Sunny Day in the Valley. I hope you can be happy for me. I have to go for an audition on Friday. It’s unlikely I’ll get it as Michael J. Fox is up for it too, but I will do my best and see what happens.

Maybe I’ll write again to tell you the outcome? I don’t know now, Maggie, I don’t know what I’m doing here, sending these letters. I feel I might be just sending them into the ether. Take care of yourself, won’t you?
